One morning, after harvesting bamboo, a lone panda stumbles onto a station platform. When the train arrives, he climbs aboard, without asking any further questions. Once he’s finished with all his bamboo, he decides to get off, while many humans jostle to get on board. Unperturbed, the panda wanders through the streets of a deserted city, his thoughts only crossed by simple preoccupations such as sleeping and eating… What surprises does this strange ride have in store for him?

Strong points

-A neat, original album that subtly denounces the destructive behavior of humans, in contrast to the simplicity of animal life.

-Ludovic Flamant’s funny story is punctuated by touches of the absurd.

-Sara Gréselle’s delicate, cross-hatched illustrations in Indian ink cleverly complement the text, setting a striking post-apocalyptic mood.

LUDOVIC FLAMANT (author) was born in 1978 in Namur, Belgium. He won the Prix International Jeunes Auteurs in 1995 and 1996, followed by his first play in 2002 and his first novel for adults in 2003. His first children’s book was published by Pastel in 2005, and since then he has been primarily a children’s author. He has written around twenty books, published by various publishing houses (Pastel de L’école des loisirs, Thierry Magnier, Les fourmis rouges, Bayard, Esperluète…) for numerous illustrators including Pascal Lemaître, Louis Joos, Emmanuelle Houdart, Jean-Luc Englebert, Émilie Seron, Delphine Perret, Émile Jadoul… In addition to his work as a library animator, he continues to have projects for stage and screen. He lives in Brussels with his son and daughter.

SARA GRÉSELLE (illustrator) is an artist-illustrator trained in applied arts at ENSAAMA Olivier de Serres in Paris. After experimenting with a number of mediums, including theater and puppetry, she turned to illustrated books in 2017. She turns dreams (nocturnal or waking) and childhood memories into book material. Winner of the “Découverte” illustration grant from the Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles, her images, bordering on magical realism, are making a name for themselves with the release in 2021 of the album Bastien, ours de la nuit, written by Ludovic Flamant and published by Versant Sud Jeunesse. She also writes and illustrates poetry for Esperluète. She lives in Brussels.
